Reconstructing Dispersed Collections: Burney and Consul Smith in the British Library

The incunabula collections of Joseph Smith and Charles Burney were very different – Smith bought beautiful books while Burney sought out important texts – but both have been absorbed into the British Library’s holdings with little evidence of provenance. This lecture will describe the reconstruction of these two collections based on evidence from the books themselves and from secondary sources, and the recording of these data in the Material Evidence in Incunabula database.

Weston Library Lecture Theatre at 5:15 p.m.  Please enter by the South Parks Road entrance.
